There’s no denying that once summer arrives, laid-back denim is where it’s at. Some prefer tattered cut-offs while others enjoy a cute romper but for me, the ideal, sunny-weather denim comes in a light wash, is rolled up and is lovingly distressed.
Whose heart didn’t flutter a bit when they saw the shredded jeans and Balenciaga red glove heels last season during Milan Fashion Week? I know mine did and the inspiration settled deep as the balance of casual and sexy came together so seamlessly. Sure, my black D’Orsay heels are a staple throughout the year but I’m taking them down to street level and working them this summer with a great pair of distressed boyfriend jeans, an easy tank, and some killer shades. Done!
For the gents, I’m keen on Zara‘s styling which leans heavily on a preppier vibe, complete with zippy dock shoes. What’s key here is the absence of white or candy-colored chinos. Out goes the stuffy yacht club look and in comes casual-cool with a nice dose of style we so appreciate on our men.
And while we’re on the subject of denim, I can’t help but to think of the late Yves Saint Laurent’s tribute quote on the matter. “I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans: the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity-all I hope for in my clothes.”
Indeed. A world without denim would surely be a strange one, no?
