Hayden’s Build-A-Terrarium Birthday Party at Seesaw SF

Last weekend, we celebrated Hayden’s 3rd birthday at one of my favorite kid’s spots in SF, Seesaw. When Hayden was a baby, Seesaw was a cafe-slash-play-studio and I used to love coming here for a cup of coffee and mingle with other moms. This space no longer opens up as a cafe, but the owner, Sabrina, who is a child psychologist, turned this space into a learning studio where she offers a variety of classes during the week that promotes social well-beings for kids and families. And on the weekends, you can rent this space out for parties! It’s the best because they have a little kitchen to serve drinks, coffee, (and even booze if you want), and they cater food in from reputable vendors. The space is already so cute so there’s really not much decoration needed. They also have a staff on hand to help out before, during, and after the party so all we needed to do was show up and enjoy!

I really think Hayden had the best time of her life! She was so happy and excited throughout the whole party. I’ve never seen her like this before (other than being at Disneyland!) I was even surprised that she kept my DIY floral crown on the whole day. Normally, she doesn’t like anything on her head. No hats, no crowns, no nothing, so this was kind of special. She also loved her red velvet birthday cake from Noe Valley Bakery. It’s one of our favorite local bakeries here and we’ve been ordering her cake there since she was 1, so it’s becoming somewhat of a tradition. I was so happy that I made the choice of having a photographer at the party. It’s always hard being the host and the photographer at the same time (especially when we’re no pros), so it was super nice to have Ashley Batz snapped for us. (You may have seen her work on this post and this post, as well as this feature in the past.)

One of my favorite photos from the party! Aren’t these munchkins so cute?! They have such bright futures ahead of them!

I wanted to do a have a little ‘arts + crafts’ activity for Hayden and her friends but had to figure something that’s fairly easy to do. They’re just at an age where they’re exploring creativity but doesn’t quite have the patience to sit down for an actual arts + crafts project, so Sabrina suggested a build-a-terrarium party. I also recalled this idea from a Pinterest party that I attended last year, so I decided to give it a try. It’s super easy to put together and the best thing is that it’s a personal party favor for the kids to take home!

What you need: Mason jars from TargetMoss and air plants from Flora Grubb (I skipped the dirt and succulents, it’s less messy and easier to do for kids.); Cute figurines – I got the Japanese ones from Daiso and the felted wool acorns from House of Moss.

I also gave out these Dr. Seuss flash cards I got from Target for $1. Such a neat and practical party favor for a toddler’s party! I just couldn’t pass them up.

It was so nice to see all the moms, dads and their adorable little ones out together. This is a group of parents I came to know through my journey as a blogger, and a half-awesome & half-ridiculous Facebook group called Cool Moms Club SF. They’re not all bloggers, but mostly in the creative field as editors, stylists, photographers, designers, and entrepreneurs. They inspire me every single day (career and motherhood wise) and it’s so great that we all have kids around the same age. It’s really nice to have a support group with moms who share common interests. If you’re interested, I highly suggest checking these wonder moms out: Lauren of The Podolls, Eva of Eva Kolenko Photography, Melissa of Ruby Press, Trina, Lorraine, Katie, Becky of Honey & Bloom, Dionne of My Moon.

Hadley slept through most of the party but luckily we were able to sneak in a few shots! We adore her like crazy and it’s been surreal to watch her and Hayden bond these days! Recently, Hayden just said to me “mama, i love my sister so much” – literally, word for word. It melts my heart!

To tell you the truth, this was only the first half of the party. We had a second wave of Hayden’s beloved aunties, uncles, grandparents and cousins who came. The room was literally filled with hugs, kisses and laughter! Hayden couldn’t have been more lucky to be loved by so many people! Thank you all for coming and making my 3 year old feel like she was the most special girl in the world!

Thank you again to Ashley Batz for the beautiful photography!
