It’s been almost a year since my little SF apartment was featured on Houzz, and yet the email I still get frequently from readers is that “where did you get your blue velvet sofa?”
So I thought once and for all, I would answer it in one post. :)
I got my sofa from Room & Board, and the style is called Easton Sectionals. I picked a special fabric – blue velvet (navy to be exact) – from their SF showroom. But if you order it online, I’m sure they can send you a swatch sample before you make the big jump.
I bought this sofa 5 years ago when I was first pregnant with Hayden. George and I were just moving into this apartment, and even though it’s not a big place, I’ve always dreamt of a large family sofa. So I just went for it. Sometimes having bigger pieces can actually make your home look bigger, and in my case, it totally did. You just need to play with the scale with your other pieces in the home.
Anyway, at the time, I was really into white sofas so if it was totally up to me this sofa would’ve been either white or light grey. But I knew that wasn’t gonna fly with having kids, so I chose the next best thing, which was navy. I thought the dark color would cover up any spit-ups and stains from my kids, and the velvet would be sophisticated enough that I can finally say I have a “grown-up” sofa.
I knew when I bought this sofa, it’s going to be with us for at least 10 years. We’re now going into our 6th year with this piece, and I can tell you that it’s worth the price tag! It’s been holding up really well, given that Hayden and Hadley constantly run and jump on it. I also love how many people it can sit without feeling super crammed and awkward, you know what I mean? We all know that you don’t want to sit that close to your in-laws. :) The only downside to getting a velvet though is the maintenance. It gets dusty fast, so be sure to stock up on those lint rollers and have it vacuumed regularly to keep it looking nice and new.
I think we’ll be staying in this apartment for awhile after having a tough time house hunting our dream home (sigh… hopefully the market will be better comes summer). So, I’ve been thinking of doing some redesign of my home. I don’t know, I kinda want a transformation, haha!I want to give this blue velvet sofa a whole new look. It will be a project for sure! Maybe it’s time to gather interior inspirations? Anyone got ideas for me?
Hope you’re having a great week!
